Steel corrodes. The concrete cover that protects it cracks, spalls, and eventually fails. This process accounts for a disproportionate share of maintenance spend across UK infrastructure and drives premature end-of-life replacement for structures that would otherwise remain serviceable. Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement does not corrode, and in the right application, its specification reduces concrete quantities, labour, material costs, maintenance liability, and embodied carbon across the full life of the asset.
Istidam Consulting has developed a design approach for specifying FRP reinforced concrete in permanent works that complies with UK design standards through design assisted by testing under BS EN 1990 Annex D. We work in direct collaboration with UK suppliers and hold Professional Indemnity cover on all FRP RC designs we produce.
Our FRP service cover:
Why FRP Reinforcement & Why the Design Approach Matters
The case for FRP reinforcement is not theoretical. Steel corrosion is the primary cause of premature concrete structure failure, and the cost of addressing it; in repair, replacement, and loss of service is substantial. Specifying reinforcement that is inherently immune to corrosion removes that liability from the structure’s maintenance profile for its entire design life.
Embodied Carbon: What the Numbers Indicate
Embodied carbon in construction is now a material consideration in UK project procurement, particularly for public sector and infrastructure clients with Net Zero commitments. Reinforcement steel is one of the most carbon-intensive components in a reinforced concrete structure. Specifying FRP reinforcement can significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with your project and help you achieve targets for carbon reduction.
Istidam forecasts FRP reinforcement to be a significant construction product in the UK’s pathway to meeting Net Zero carbon targets. The material properties that make it structurally viable; tensile strength typically two to three times that of equivalent steel cross-section, combined with substantially lower self-weight, also allow for reduction in reinforcement quantities and, in some cases, reduction in concrete section sizes. The carbon saving at project completion is therefore compounded across both the reinforcement and the concrete.
UK Design Compliance: Design Assisted by Testing
There is currently no dedicated Eurocode for FRP reinforced concrete. This is the single most common reason that FRP RC specification stalls on UK projects, the design team has no established code pathway and defaults to conventional steel. The route to compliance in the UK is design assisted by testing under BS EN 1990 Annex D, which allows a structural design to be validated through a defined programme of physical testing where code-based design methods do not exist or are not applicable.
Istidam has developed and applied this approach specifically for FRP RC permanent works. The design process integrates manufacturer test data, with BS EN 1990 Annex D methodology to produce a fully documented, PI-covered design that satisfies UK Building Regulations and is defensible to Building Control. This removes the compliance uncertainty that has historically prevented FRP RC from being specified on projects where it would otherwise be technically and commercially appropriate.
Where FRP RC Is Most Applicable
FRP reinforcement delivers the clearest technical and commercial case in environments where steel corrosion risk is highest: marine and coastal structures, below-ground construction in aggressive ground conditions, highway and infrastructure elements exposed to de-icing salts, water treatment and drainage structures, and any element where future maintenance and its access is restricted or costly.
FRP RC is also relevant where electromagnetic neutrality is required; MRI facilities, data centres, and some transport infrastructure, and where the non-conductive properties of the reinforcement are a functional specification requirement rather than an incidental benefit.
Instructing Istidam Consulting
If you are considering FRP reinforcement on a current or forthcoming project and require a feasibility assessment, structural design, or technical presentation for your design or client team, contact Istidam Consulting. We confirm scope and fees at the outset and can engage at any stage of the design process, from early feasibility through to detailed design and specification.

We cannot recommend Istidam highly enough. Over the course of a challenging three-year legal and insurance battle, Tarek proved to be nothing short of exceptional. His expertise in civil and structural engineering was invaluable, but what truly set him apart was his unwavering support, patience, and genuine understanding throughout the entire process. Tarek was consistently professional, highly responsive, and incredibly thorough in his advice. During what was an extremely stressful and complex period for us, he provided not only technical clarity but also much-needed reassurance and confidence at every stage. Having him on our side felt like a true blessing. His guidance made a significant difference to both the outcome and our peace of mind. We are profoundly grateful for his support and would strongly urge anyone considering any kind of building or structural project to consult Istidam first. It’s simply not worth proceeding without their expertise. Thank you so much for everything.Posted on Google![]()

Istadam contacted me promptly after an initial enquiry. I was impressed by their professionalism and they carried out an inspection of my house at a date and time that suited me. The structural engineer who arrived, on time, immediately put my mind at rest and offered a practical solution to my query and also looked around the whole of my property to ensure there were no other signs that would indicate a structural problem. I highly recommend their professionalism and service.Posted on Google![]()

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Excellent service from Tarek, Tameem and Yosra We used them during the purchase of a property with historic subsidence and they were professional, clear, and very reassuring throughout. Their detailed report helped me reduce five figures off the asking price, which made a huge difference. They were also fair on price and happy to match other quotes where companies had similar qualifications and insurance. Would thoroughly recommend Tarek and the team to anyone looking for a reliable and professional structural engineerPosted on Google![]()

My husband and I couldn't be more grateful for the support, expertise and professionalism of Tarek from Istidam Consulting. He continually went above and beyond to ensure that a structural survey on our dream family home was completed and amended in line with what was required for our mortgage lender. We are beyond grateful that although 'all in a days work' for Tarek, he was able to recognise the monumental impact of his service in enabling us to provide an exciting future and 'forever home' for our young family. We couldn't recommend this company more!Posted on Google![]()

I highly recommend their services. In addition to the detailed structural report, Tameem has been extremely helpful in responding thoroughly, promptly and professionally to all of our questions. He has gone out of his way to make sure we were at ease and understood the structural work involved. Thank you Istidam!Posted on Google![]()

We got Tarek in to provide a structural report on the property after concerning cracks flagged in our building survey from another provider. Tarek picked up on a lot more potential issues with the property and I think has saved us tens of thousands of £s. He's very thorough and knowledgable and would highly recommend his services.
